2025 Canadian All Abilities Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

The Canadian All Abilities Championship is a relatively new but significant addition to Golf Canada’s national championship portfolio, introduced to promote inclusivity and showcase the talents of golfers with disabilities. This tournament was first launched in 2019, marking an important step toward making golf more accessible and giving athletes with disabilities a platform to compete at a high level. The event is open to golfers with a range of physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities and is designed to be a highly competitive and inclusive championship.

Golf Canada’s decision to create the Canadian All Abilities Championship reflects the growing global movement toward inclusivity in sports. By providing a space for athletes of all abilities to showcase their skills, the tournament aligns with broader initiatives like the International Golf Federation’s (IGF) efforts to promote golf for all, regardless of physical limitations. The format of the event mirrors that of other prestigious golf championships, with stroke play over 54 holes, but it also includes modifications that make the competition fair and accessible to individuals with varying needs.

Since its inception, the championship has attracted talented golfers from across Canada and beyond, celebrating their skills and determination. The championship has also served as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges that golfers with disabilities face and the importance of inclusive design in golf courses and equipment. As the event continues to grow, it has become a central piece in Golf Canada’s broader mission to make the sport more inclusive and welcoming to all, reflecting the organization’s commitment to diversity and accessibility within the sport.

2025 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

Conducted since 1962, the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship has grown to become one of most popular amateur golf events in Canada. In 1995, Golf Canada introduced the 65 and over Canadian Super Senior division in addition to the existing 55 and over age group.

Calgary’s Bob Wylie has captured seven John Rankin Memorial Trophies since 1985. Nick Weslock, one of Canada’s greatest amateurs of the century, won the event six times between 1973 and 1983. Ray Reid of Edmonton claimed a place in Canada’s golf history by winning the inaugural Super Senior Championship and having his name as the first to be engraved on the Governors Cup in 1995. Graham Cooke is a four-time winner of this event and is the winningest amateur champion in Canada; his resume also includes seven mid-amateur titles.

In 2010, Paul Simson made history by becoming the first person to win the British, U.S. and Canadian senior titles in the same year.

The Senior Championship is played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes. The Super Senior Championship is contested concurrently over the first 36 holes of the championship. The Senior Inter-provincial Team Championship, established in 1977, runs concurrently with the first 36 holes of the tournament.

temp alt for theme iandt
History

The Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship is one of the most sought-after golf titles in Canada. Conducted by Golf Canada, the Mid-Amateur is for golfers aged 25 and over. Originally known as the RCGA Pre-Seniors Championship, the championship was renamed the Mid-Amateur in 1989. The Inter-Provincial Team Championship for the R. Bruce Forbes Trophy was first conducted in 1992 and is played concurrently over the first two rounds of stroke play.

The Mid-Amateur attracts the top golfers throughout the country each year, including Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. and Stu Hamilton of Brampton, Ont. Together, the pair captured 11 of the first 20 championships played since the event was established in 1987. More recently, Elmira, Ont. native Garrett Rank has found success at the Mid-Amateur, earning three consecutive wins from 2014-2016.

In 2006, the format was changed from match to stroke play, with a Mid-Master category introduced for golfers over the age of 40.

2025 Canadian Junior Boys Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

There is no better proving ground for young male golfers in this country than the Canadian Junior Boys Championship. Conducted by Golf Canada since 1938, when the first championship was played at London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont., the Junior has given Canadians a glimpse into the future glory that many of its champions have gone on to enjoy. Canadian Golf Hall of Famers Doug Silverberg, George Knudson, Gary Cowan and Doug Roxburgh have all won the Silver Cup as young men before moving on to fine amateur and professional careers.

In addition to the 18-and-under championship, the 16-and-under Juvenile Championship was added in 1970, with the winner receiving the Jack Bailey Trophy. The Junior and Juvenile championship rounds are played concurrently over 72 holes, with the Junior Inter-Provincial Team Championship held in conjunction with the first 36 holes. This team event, which pits teams from every province against each other in stroke play competition, has been played concurrently with the first two rounds of stroke play since 1959.

2025 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

More than a century old, the Amateur was first contested as one of the newly formed Royal Canadian Golf Association’s first orders of business in 1895 at the Ottawa Golf Club. When T.M. Harley of Kingston Golf Club defeated A. Simpson of Ottawa Golf Club 7 & 5, a proud tradition of Canadian championship golf was born. Hall of Famer George S. Lyon won the Amateur an incredible eight times between 1898 and 1914 and was runner-up two more times while the inimitable Sandy Somerville made it to the match play final ten times between 1924 and 1938, capturing six championships of his own.

A match play event from the beginning, the Amateur changed to stroke play for the 1969 championship and remained that way through 1994 when it reverted to match play in honour of the RCGA’s and the championship’s centennial in 1995. The championship once again reverted to stroke play in 2008.

Inter-provincial team matches between Ontario and Quebec were first played in 1882, eventually developing into the Willingdon Cup in 1927. This team event, which pits teams from every province against each other in stroke play competition, has been played in conjunction with the Canadian Amateur since 1931 and remains one of the highlights of tournament week. The Willingdon Cup is contested concurrently during the first two rounds of stroke play in the championship. In 2010, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship changed to a double field format for the first time ever. The champion receives an exemption into the next year’s RBC Canadian Open and the U.S. Amateur Championship.

2025 Canadian Junior Girls Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

With over 60 years of history, the Canadian Junior Girls Championship continues to produce top calibre players who contend years later for amateur and professional titles. Top Canadian golfers like Sandra Post, Marilyn Palmer (O’Connor), Gayle Hitchins (Borthwick), Alena Sharp, Maude-Aimée LeBlanc, Rebecca Lee-Bentham, and Brooke Henderson all saw early success at this coveted championship.

Heather Kuzmich remains the top name in the Canadian Junior Girls Championship record books by boasting four consecutive championship wins from 1981 to 1984. Kuzmich, Lisa Meldrum and the legendary Mabel Thompson are the only three women to ever accomplish a ‘four-peat’ in Canadian Women’s amateur golf history. (Mabel Thompson earned four amateur titles while Meldrum won a single junior and three amateur titles).

The Canadian Junior Girls Championship has been conducted since 1955 and has also been referred to as the CLGA National Junior Championship.

2025 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship

temp alt for theme iandt
History

Over a century old and with more than 100 titles contested, the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship is among the oldest golfing competitions in Canada.

During the 1901 season, the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Que. hosted the first competition which was won by Canadian Lillas Young. From there the championship grew and has spawned a long list of great champions who have gone on to see international success. The most famous winner is World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit, whose 11 victories and five runner-up finishes remain a record that will not be broken anytime soon.

Early pioneer golfers such as Ada Mackenzie and Mabel Thomson paved the way for the likes of Jocelyn Bourassa, Cathy Sherk, Dawn Coe-Jones and A.J. Eathorne, all of whom earned a start by raising the coveted Duchess of Connaught Gold Cup – the trophy presented annually to the Women’s Amateur Champion.

History was made in 2003 when Lisa Meldrum became the fifth person to win three consecutive Amateur titles. A year later, Mary Ann Hayward earned her fourth Canadian title and is now the oldest to claim a Canadian Women’s Amateur championship at age 44.
