Pitt Meadows set for Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific Championship

PITT MEADOWS, B.C. – Golf Canada’s first regional junior golf championship of 2019 is set to take place this week as the Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific Championship gets underway at Pitt Meadows Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, B.C from May 10-12.
With support from British Columbia Golf, the Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific Championship is the first of six regional junior championships across the country, presented in partnership with Acura. The 54-hole stroke play tournament begins with a practice round on Thursday, May 9 before the tournament gets underway with round one action on Friday, May 10.
Designed in 1963, Pitt Meadows Golf Club is a member-owned facility. With the picturesque Golden Ears Mountains as a backdrop, the course boasts a 25,000 sq. foot clubhouse, and has hosted numerous nationally and provincially recognized championships.
“The Future Links, driven by Acura Championships are great opportunities for our best junior golfers across Canada to showcase their talent,” said Adam Cinel, the Rules and Competitions Coordinator with Golf Canada. “Golf Canada and British Columbia Golf are looking forward to hosting an exceptional field at Pitt Meadows Golf Club. The course is in immaculate condition and will provide a fair but tough test for all athletes.”
The field will consist of 87 competitors in the junior boys’ division with the top five earning exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on August 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B.
The junior girls’ division will consist of 33 golfers with the top five (including ties) earning an exemption into the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship on July 29-August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

Since 2016, Golf Canada and Special Olympics Canada have partnered to host Special Olympics athletes at the Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific and Ontario Championships. On Wednesday, May 8, 12 athletes and their caddies from the British Columbia region participated in a 9-hole event to kick off the championship. Golf Canada is committed to providing opportunities for all golfers to participate and compete and are continually looking at ways to enhance the experience for these athletes in the future and our partnership moving forward.

Golf Canada is pleased to announce its 2019 championship schedule, which includes a record setting 31 amateur and professional competitions in addition to various qualifiers hosted at golf facilities across Canada.
The 2019 schedule is headlined by Golf Canada’s premier professional championships — the RBC Canadian Open, June 3-9 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ont., and the CP Women’s Open, to be conducted August 19-25 at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont.
The 2019 competition calendar includes eight national amateur championships, eight Future Links, driven by Acura regional junior competitions and two international women’s championships.
As the National Sport Federation and governing body of golf in Canada, Golf Canada conducts the country’s premier amateur and professional golf championships as part of its mandate to support the development of the nation’s top talent through world-class competition.

Championship Season at a Glance…
The 115th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will be contested at Glen Arbour Golf Course in Hammonds Plains, N.S. and The Links at Brunello in Timberlea, N.S., August 3-8. A field of 240 players will be cut to the low 70 players and ties after 36 holes, with the final two rounds contested at Glen Arbour. The champion will receive an exemption into the 2020 RBC Canadian Open, as well as an invitation to the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. Additionally, the winner will receive an exemption into local qualifying for the 2020 U.S. Open, and if applicable, the U.S. Junior, U.S. Mid-Amateur or USGA Senior Amateur Championships.
The 106th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship takes place July 22-26 at Red Deer Golf & Country Club in Red Deer, Alta. with the champion earning an exemption into the 2019 CP Women’s Open, as well as an exemption into the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Additionally, the winner will receive exemptions into the U.S. Girls’ Junior, U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championships, if applicable.
Red Deer Golf & Country Club
At the junior level, the 81st playing of the Canadian Junior Boys Championship will be contested August 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B., with the winner earning an exemption into the 2020 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. The 65th Canadian Junior Girls Championship will be contested at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.
The 17th Canadian University/College Championship will be held May 27-31 at FireRock Golf Club in Komoka, Ont. The national championship includes both a team and individual component featuring Canada’s top university and college talent.
The Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur will be held Aug. 19-23 at Summit Golf Club in Richmond Hill, Ont.
The Future Links, driven by Acura regional junior series will round out the schedule with two Fall Series Championships in 2019, totalling eight competitions conducted in conjunction with the Provincial Golf Associations. The Fall Series will take place in September in British Columbia and Quebec, where the region’s best junior golfers will compete to earn exemptions into their respective 2020 national championships. The Future Links, driven by Acura Championships provide juniors an opportunity to develop and showcase their skills at the highest level of tournament golf.
The 2019 RBC Canadian Open on the PGA TOUR will be contested June 3-9 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ont., and will mark the 110th playing of Canada’s National Men’s Open Championship.
The CP Women’s Open will return to the Greater Toronto Area as Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont., will host the stars of the LPGA Tour from August 19-25.
The Astor Trophy makes its return to Canadian soil after 20 years abroad. The 16th playing of the international women’s amateur event will run Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 at Royal Colwood Golf Club in Victoria, B.C. The five-team competition features both foursomes and stroke play and is contested once every four years between Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.
Cedar Brae Golf Club in Scarborough, Ont., will host the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship from September 9-13, with the winner earning an exemption into the 2020 U.S. Senior Amateur. The Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Championship will be held Aug. 17-20 at Osoyoos Golf Club in Osoyoos, B.C., with the champion earning an exemption into the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and 2020 U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
An accomplished field of international competitors will take to Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont., from Sept. 22–27, for the sixth annual World Junior Girls Championship. The event will welcome 20 countries playing as 3-member squads competing for both a team and individual title.
The Golf Fore the Cure presented by Subaru National Event will be held at Credit Valley Golf & Country Club on Sept. 23. The one-day event is a celebration of the success of all Golf Fore the Cure presented by Subaru events held nationwide during the 2019 season. To date, the fundraising efforts of thousands of golfers have totaled more than $6.7 million for breast cancer research since the program’s inception in 2003.

ROBERTS CREEK, B.C. – Golf Canada’s eighth and final regional junior golf championship of 2018 is set to take begin on Friday as the Future Links, driven by Acura Fall Series continues at Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club.
The tournament marks the second instalment of the Future Links, driven by Acura Fall Series — a two-championship extension taking place for the first time in the fall of 2018. With the addition, the Future Links championship series now features eight tournaments through the course of the season, each hosted in conjunction with the respective provincial association.
The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on Sept. 27 before the tournament gets underway with round one on Sept. 28.
Originally designed by Ernie Brown, with later additions from Les Furber, the Sunshine Coast course has boasted stunning mountain and ocean views since opening in 1969. The lush fairways and winding forest holes will challenge up-and-coming junior golfers in Golf Canada’s final championship of the 2018 season.
“British Columbia Golf is excited to host our first Fall Series event with Golf Canada at one of our province’s many beautiful facilities,” said Greg Moody, tournament director with British Columbia Golf. “Hosting another Future Links regional championship provides additional opportunity for Canada’s top junior golfers to showcase their skills and continue their development.”
The field will consist of 62 junior golfers with the top six earning exemptions into their respective Canadian Junior National Championship.

Hailey McLaughlin and Yuqi Liu crowned champions at Future Links Fall Series

MANSONVILLE, Que. – Hailey McLaughlin emerged as leader in the Girls Division and Yuqi Liu captured the Boys Division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Fall Series Championship at Owl’s Head Golf Club on Sunday.
McLaughlin, who started the third and final round with a one-stroke lead, carded a 3-over 75 to distance herself from runner-up Lory Paradis en route to grabbing a seven-stroke victory. The Markham, Ont., native made her mark in the second round—which was also her birthday—with a tournament-low 69 (a personal best), helping her confidence in the final round.
“I had to stay focused, play my own game, try to stay in the right head space,” said the Team Ontario member. “The week started out rough…but I knew what I had to work on. I focused on that the last two days and it paid off.”
The 17-year-old’s final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th hole, which helped her secure her first Future Links Championship—she finished T3 at the Ontario event earlier this year.
Second place finisher Paradis of Blainville, Que., struggled with a 9-over-par 81, her worst round of the event. Rounding out the top three were a pair of golfers at 18 over par, Emily Romancew (Pierresfonds, Que.) and Élizabeth Labbé (Lévis, Que.). All earned exemptions into next year’s Canadian Junior Girls Championship from July 29 – Aug. 2, at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.
In the Boys Division, Yuqi Liu of Thornhill, Ont., put the pedal down in the final round with a 4-under-par 68 giving him a three-stroke victory over Ashton McCulloch, who he shared second place with to start the day. Liu closed the 54-hole event at 8 under par (68-72-68).
McCulloch, a Kingston, Ont., product, finished three back at 5 under par for the tournament (71-69-71) and earns one of three spots into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship from Aug. 11-15, at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B. They’ll be joined by Eric Byun of Richmond Hill, Ont., who rounded out the top three with a score of 4 under par (67-72-73).
The second Fall Series event and final Future Links championship of the season will take place at Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club in Roberts Creek, B.C., from Sept. 27-30.

PORT BLANDFORD, N.L. – Owen Mullen emerged as leader in the Boys Division while Haley Baker captured a playoff victory at the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship at Twin Rivers Golf Course on Thursday.
Mullen, who started the day co-leading with Peter Blazevic, shot a 1-over-par 72 — the low round of the day — to earn his victory in the Boys Division. The Truro, N.S., talent had a slow start with three consecutive bogeys but rebounded with an impressive eagle on the 9th hole, followed by three birdies on the back-nine to earn a two-stroke victory.
“I’m really excited. It’s my second win of the year. I haven’t been playing my best lately so it was good to close this one out and get the win. It’ll be my first nationals and going to Medicine Hat should be a good time looking to play well and hoping to make the cut.”

Blazevic, Mullen’s second round co-lead, finished close behind in second after carding a 3 over. The 14-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., struggled throughout the round but ended strong with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes. He finished at 6-over-par 221.
Finishing in third place was Ewan Jr. Kelly from Beaver Bank, N.S., at 11-over-par 224. The 17-year-old fired a tournament-low 70 on Tuesday to lead after the first round but fell to third place after carding 78-76.
The other top-six finishers earning exemptions into the 2018 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on July 30-Aug. 2 at Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club in Medicine Hat, Alta., are: Michael Simms of St. John’s, N.L., Mark Chandler of Chester, N.S., and Eric Yun of Richmond Hill, Ont.
In the Girls Division, Haley Baker and Raesa Sheikh fired final rounds of 11 over and 7 over, respectively, to finish the round at 17-over-par 230 and enter into a playoff for first. Baker outlasted Sheikh and won the playoff by one stroke on hole number one.
“I think it’s a pretty big win for me. It was probably one of the better tournaments I played in score wise but it was pretty nerve-wracking,” said Baker, who played alongside her younger sister in the final round. “My sister was really supportive of me because she saw I was struggling. She just told me to stay with it, so that was very helpful.”
Four shots back from Baker and Sheikh was Haley’s younger sister, Abbey Baker. The 13-year-old finished in third at 21-over-234.
Rounding out the top six earning exemptions into the 2018 Canadian Junior Girls Championship on July 31-Aug. 3 at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, B.C. are Ashley Chow (North York, Ont.), Taylor Cormier (Corner Brook, N.L.) and Mackenzie Deveau (Moncton, N.B.).

PORT BLANDFORD, N.L. — Haley Baker holds onto her lead in the Girls Division while Peter Blazevic and Owen Mullen co-lead the Boys Division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship on Wednesday.
Baker held on to the top spot in the Girls Division after posting a second-round 4 over. The Ashburn, N.S., native extended her lead to head into the final round with a comfortable four-stroke margin. Despite being unable to register a single birdie, Baker tied with her younger sister Abbey for the low score of the day.
Raesa Sheikh was in a great position after 9 holes but struggled on the back-nine with two double bogeys, eventually sinking a birdie on her last hole. The Caledon, Ont., product sits in second place at 10-over-par.
Rounding out the top-three in the Girls Division is Abbey Baker at 14 over. The 13-year-old was the only junior girl to score multiple birdies during the second round.
In the Boys Division, Owen Mullen moved from fourth to a tie for first after firing four birdies and posting an even-71, the low score of the day.
“It’s a little tight off the tee so you can’t be super aggressive out there and have to strategize well because it was so windy today. The stretch from 4 to 12 really got my round going and kept it together,” said the 14-year-old from Truro, N.S. “My plan tomorrow is just to play my own game and not worry about what the other guys are doing.”
He will enter the final round tied for the lead alongside Mississauga’s Blazevic, who started round two in a tie for second.
Yesterday’s leader, Ewan Jr. Kelly, sits one shot back from the leaders. The 17-year-old, who shot a 7 over, faced troubles throughout the round but found redemption with an eagle on hole 16.

PORT BLANDFORD, N.L. — Ewan Jr. Kelly and Haley Baker carded a 1 under and 2 over, respectively, to lead their divisions at the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship at Twin Rivers Golf Course.
Kelly was the only player to score under par during the first round of the tournament. The Beaver Bank, N.S., native overcame a couple of bogeys on the front-nine with four birdies to head into the second round with a four-stroke lead.
“I hit it pretty solid and managed really well,” said the 17-year-old. “My plan tomorrow is to keep it in play and miss in the right spots. I only hit one driver today and probably not going to hit any more.”
Jordie Cooper of Fall River, N.S. and Peter Blazevic of Mississauga, Ont. both shot 3 over to share a piece of second place.
In the Girls’ Division, Haley Baker fired four birdies in order to recover from a rough front-nine that included three bogeys and a double-bogey.
“My start was a little shaky but my putting was really good today,” said the 16-year-old Halifax, N.S. product. “I got into some trouble on a couple of holes today so my plan for the second round is to keep it in play.”
The race in the Girls’ Division will be tight on Wednesday. Raesa Sheikh of Caledon, Ont., sits one shot behind Baker in second place at 3 over while Ashley Chow of North York, Ont., is in third at 4 over.

PORT BLANDFORD, N.L. — Golf Canada concludes its 2018 Future Links championship season as the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship is ready to take place at Terra Nova Resort on the award-winning Twin Rivers Golf Course from July 17-19.
With support from Golf Newfoundland and Labrador, the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship is the final regional junior championship presented in partnership with Acura this season. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on July 16 before the tournament gets underway with round one on July 17.
Twin Rivers Golf Course officially opened in August 1984 as a nine-hole public course in Terra Nova National Park designed by Robbie Robinson. A second nine-hole, designed by Doug Carrick, opened in July 1991.
“Golf Newfoundland and Labrador is excited to present the 2018 Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship alongside Golf Canada,” said this week’s Tournament Director, Greg Hillier. “We look forward to seeing how Twin Rivers Golf Course tests Canada’s premier junior golfers while giving them an opportunity to showcase their skills.”

NOTABLES Haley Baker of Halifax, Nova Scotia The 16-year-old has placed in the top-ten in five out of the six events she played in this season. Her best finish in 2018 so far was second place at the 2018 East Cost Junior Championship.
Owen Mullen of Truro, Nova Scotia The 14-year-old finished T10 at the event last year. Mullen won the 2018 CJGA Atlantic Spring Classic and has three other top-five finishes this year. He ranks 50th on the Future Links, driven by Acura Order of Merit.
Daniel Kirby of Woodstock, New Brunswick The 15-year-old finished T7 at the same event last year, the highest of anyone in the Boys Division this year. Kirby finished first at the CJGA DeLaet Cup Team East Qualifier at Northumberland Links Golf Club and currently ranks 36th in the Future Links, driven by Acura Order of Merit.
Taylor Cormier of Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador The 16-year-old had a stellar 2017 season, winning four out of the five events that she competed in addition to being named Golf Newfoundland and Labrador’s Junior Female Golfer of the Year. She tied for thirteenth at the event last year.

Hoydalo, Scraba win Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man.— Wesley Hoydalo and Sydney Scraba shot 2 under and 13 over, respectively, to emerge victorious at the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship at Portage Golf Club on Sunday.
The junior boys, who failed to score in the red after two tough rounds, brought their A-game to the final day.
With three sets of consecutive birdies across his final 18 holes, Wesley Hoydalo, who started the day sharing the lead with Saskatoon’s Bradley Moser, fought hard to emerge victorious in the junior boys division. The Selkirk, Man., talent was the only player to finish under par at the tournament at 2-under-par 208.
“I started off great at 4 under through seven. I missed a few putts early but I got to 14 and went birdie-birdie and birdied 17, which was probably a highlight,” said Hoydalo. “Last year, I just missed it by a shot, so it feels really great to win.”
Next up for the 18-year-old is the Elmhurst Invitational, where he will compete for an exemption into the Canadian Amateur Championship.
Calgary’s Jakob Chicoyne put on a spectacular show, fighting hard during the final day to tie with Hoydalo for a tournament low (66) and earn a piece of second alongside Bradley Moser of Saskatoon, Sask., at 1-over-par 211.
Gerry Mei of North York, Ont., Sylvain Ruest of Winnipeg, Man., and Jacob Armstrong of Winnipeg, Man., all shot 10-over-par 220 to tie for fourth and earn exemptions into the 2018 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on July 30-Aug. 2 at Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club in Medicine Hat, Alta.
The course proved to be challenging for the junior girls during the final round of the tournament but Sydney Scraba managed to hold on to her lead, carding a 7-over to secure a four-stroke victory in the junior girls division at 13-over-par 229.
The 17-year-old started the tournament tied for fourth but moved up the leaderboard on Saturday after being the only junior golfer at the tournament to score under par after two rounds.
“I finished the way I wanted to on Father’s Day with my dad, so it’s a really good moment for him and I to spend together,” said the Calgary, Alta., native. “I’m so grateful that I got to play really well and see how good I can become when I go to college in August. I’m quite excited for what’s going to come to me.”
Michelle Liu of Vancouver, B.C., ended the tournament in second at 17-over-par 233 while Bobbi Uhl claimed third at 19-over-par 235.
Rounding out the top-six earning exemptions into the 2018 Canadian Junior Girls Championship on July 31-Aug. 3 at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, B.C. are Vanessa Zhang (Vancouver, B.C.), Jillian Friyia (London, Ont.) and Sandee Park (West Vancouver, B.C.).
