OAKVILLE, Ont. – The 2019 Future Links, driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge National Event will take place on Sunday, August 18 at the prestigious Magna Golf Club.

Thirty-one golfers from four age groups will compete in the 11th edition of the Junior Skills National Event, which brings together the top-scoring juniors from coast-to-coast. New in 2019 is the 8 and under age group, including four players from both the boys and girls divisions.

The participating juniors will compete in a three-part skills challenge (putting, chipping and driving) with one overall winner per age group and gender. 

Golf Canada, in partnership with Acura and the PGA of Canada will host the national finals of the 2019 Future Links, driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge on Sunday, August 18 at Magna Golf Club. The event is the culmination of more than 3000 Future Links, driven by Acura Junior Skills participants competing at 140 qualifying events held across Canada.

The field is comprised of 31 golfers from across Canada, all selected from the top of the Future Links, driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge National Leaderboard.

FORMAT:

Driving: Each competitor receives three drives. Points are awarded and dependent on distance and aim of the drive. The drive must come to rest within the 30-yard width to qualify for points. The number of points is dependent on the distances completed.

Chipping: Each competitor receives three shots. Points are awarded and dependent on the distance of the chip from the target.

Putting: Each competitor receives one putt each from each distance of 5, 10 and 20 feet. Points are awarded for holing the putt and for proximity to the hole.

The winners of the Future Links driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge National Event in the boys and girls 15-18 age groups will receive an exemption into their local Future Links driven by Acura Championship in 2020. All other attending participants of the Future Links driven by Acura Junior Skills National Event will receive prizing courtesy of Titleist Footjoy.

On Saturday, August 17, Future Links, driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge National Event participants will have the opportunity to play the famous Magna Golf Club layout in an exciting match play format, outfitted by program sponsor Cobra-Puma Golf.

HARTLAND, N.B. – Isabella Ferguson of Ottawa completed an incredible comeback to win the girls division, while Malik Dao of Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Que., maintained his lead to the win the boys division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club on Thursday.

Ferguson was in a tie for third entering the final round, trailing leader and defending champion Haley Baker of Halifax by 10 strokes. The 14-year-old carded the only under par round in the girls division over the three tournament days. Her 2-under-par performance was enough to surpass the defending champion, but Baker forced a playoff with birdies on each of her final two holes.

On the first playoff hole, Baker missed a ten-foot birdie putt, and Ferguson dropped her four-footer to birdie the par-5 1st and win the title.

“I started with two birdies on the first four holes. That definitely gave me confidence,” said Ferguson. “I was very nervous [in the playoff]. I had a good drive which calmed me down a little bit. I was all shaky over my putt, but I kept it together.”

It was the second consecutive year that Baker and her younger sister, Abbey, both finished in the top-three at the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship. Abbey finished third at 15 over for the tournament, one shot ahead of Heather McLean (Port Williams, N.S.), with Julie Gauvin of Dieppe, N.B. in fifth.

The top five golfers earned exemptions to the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship from July 29-August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

Dao, recorded an even-par 72 in the final round to win the tournament by two strokes. He is the second member of the Dao family to capture a Future Links title – his older sister, Céleste, won the 2017 Future Links, driven by Acura Québec Championship.

“On No. 16, which is a tough hole, I made two really good shots,” said Dao. “I knew that I had the tournament at my fingertips then. This year I was really struggling, and this is a big win for me. It’s my first national win.”

Daniel Kirby, a Hartland, N.B., native who was playing at his home course, led for the majority of the final round. A double-bogey on the par-4 16th from Kirby opened the door for Dao, who made two clutch birdies on his final four holes to win the tournament.

Felix-Antoine Levasseur (Nicolet, Que.) and Jake Smith (Dartmouth, N.S.) finished tied for third at 1-under-par for the tournament.

Defending champion Owen Mullen (Truro, N.S.) rounded out the top five finishers receiving an exemption into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship from August 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club.

HARTLAND, N.B. – Golf Canada continues its 2019 Future Links championship season as the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship is set to take place at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club from July 16-18.

With support from Golf New Brunswick, the Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship is the sixth regional junior championship presented in partnership with Acura this season. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on July 15 before the tournament gets underway with round one on July 16.

First opened in 1993, Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club overlooks the Saint John River Valley. An above-average slope rating of 132 and strategically located ponds and bunkers makes it a challenging course. The architectural design of the clubhouse, the tee-box markers and the usable covered bridge for carts on hole No. 17 pays homage to the longest covered bridge in the world, which is located in Hartland, N.B.

“Golf Canada and Golf New Brunswick are excited to present the 2019 Future Links, driven by Acura Atlantic Championship,” said Bari Gourley, the Tournament Director with Golf New Brunswick. “We look forward to seeing how Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club tests Canada’s premier junior golfers while giving them an opportunity to showcase their skills.”

The field will consist of 69 junior golfers in the Junior Boys Division with the top five earning exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship August 11-15, also at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club. Should there be a tie for the fifth position, a playoff will be conducted following the conclusion of play.

The Junior Girls Division consists of 14 golfers with the top five (including ties) earning an exemption into the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship July 29-August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

YORKTON, Sask. – Josh Nagy came from behind, while Hyeji Yang maintained her second-round lead to win the boys and girls division, respectively, at the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship at Deer Park Municipal Golf Course.

Yang, from Langley, B.C., moved into the lead during the second-round and topped the field by seven strokes at 11-over par 227. Birdies were at a premium throughout the tournament in the girls division, but Yang’s two back-nine birdies on Sunday helped her secure the victory.

“I think I played not bad overall this week,” said Yang. “Today my game was struggling on the front nine and I couldn’t make some birdies when I had a chance. On the back nine I was pushing myself. On 13 my shots started coming back and on No. 15 I made a 15-foot birdie putt which helped me get more confidence and momentum.”

Sherri Yang finished in second at 18-over. The Richmond, B.C. product held the lead following the first-round, but was unable to withstand the charge from Hyeji Yang. She finished a stroke ahead of Calgary native Brooke Frerichs, who put in three consistent rounds to end up 19-over.

Autumn Neiszner of Regina and Kaitlyn Wingnean of Edmonton round out the top-five earning exemptions to the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship from July 29-August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

In the boys division, Josh Nagy cemented himself atop the leaderboard with a tremendous final round. The Saskatoon native made a double bogey on the par-4 second hole, but went on to make eight birdies to finish the day at 6-under par 66 and 3-under par 213 for the tournament.

Ranked No. 2 on Golf Saskatchewan’s Order of Merit, Nagy shot only the third under-par round of the tournament. The other rounds belonged to Calgary’s Richard Dou, who carded a 2-under 70 during the opening round, and Winnipeg’s Jordon McDonald, who shot a 1-under 71 in the final round.

“It’s an honour,” said Nagy. “I came in playing alright, and it was really nice to be able to turn the week around in the last round. I had a little hiccup on No. 2, and then I was able to bear down on the greens.”

Finishing seven strokes behind Nagy was second-round leader Tae Kyoung (Eric) Yun of Richmond Hill, Ont. Yun shot even-par on Saturday, finishing 4-over for the tournament.

An even-par final round from Neel Soni secured T3 for the Winnipeg product, tied with fellow Winnipegger Jacob Armstrong at 6-over.

Dou rounded out the top-five at 7-over.

Each of the top five finishers received an exemption into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship from August 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B.

YORKTON, Sask. —  The Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship is set to take place June 14-16 at Deer Park Municipal Golf Course.

With support from Golf Saskatchewan, the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship is the fifth of eight regional junior championships presented in partnership with Acura. The 54-hole stroke play tournament begins with a practice round on June 13 before the tournament gets officially underway with the opening-round June 14.

Regarded as one of Saskatchewan’s top-ranked 18-hole golf courses, Deer Park Municipal Golf Course’s already challenging terrain is dotted with numerous water and sand areas.

Joly, Que. – Eric (Joohyung) Byun of Richmond Hill, Ont. maintained his second-round lead to win the boys’ division, while Brooke Rivers of Brampton, Ont. remained dominant to win in the girls’ division of the Future Links, driven by Acura Québec Championship at Club de golf Les Boisés de Joly, Sunday.

Byun entered the final round with a share of the lead and shot 2-over par 74 Sunday to win the 54-hole tournament by a single stroke. Byun’s three-straight birdies on holes No. 5 through 7 put him atop the leaderboard and he withstood a strong push from Remi Chartier, who finished second.

Byun was T21 at the 2018 Future Links, driven by Acura Québec Championship. He finished T38 at last year’s Canadian Junior Boys Championship.

Chartier, a Montreal native, held a share of the lead heading into the final round. He finished second at last year’s Future Links, driven by Acura Québec Championship and a bogey free back nine helped him to an even-par 216 on the tournament.

Frédéric Rousseau (Longueuil, Que.), Michael Ikejiani (Minesing, Ont.) and Logan Boucher (Beaconsfield, Que.) round out top-five players in the boys’ division advancing to the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, taking place August 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club.

In the junior girls’ division, Brooke Rivers was unstoppable throughout the tournament, winning by 16-strokes.

The Brampton, Ont. native shot the only under-par rounds of the tournament in the girls’ division, carding 2-under par 70 in each of her three rounds. She finished at 6-under during the 54-hole tournament.

Raesa Sheikh of Caledon, Ont. was the closest competitor to Rivers. Sheikh made an eagle on the par-5 No. 7 in the final round, giving her a 3-over-par 75 on the day and 11-over for the tournament.

Defending champion Emily Romancew of Pierrefonds, Que. came in third. Romancew shot 12-over par 228 for the tournament.

Rounding out the top five (including ties) headed to the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship held from July 29-August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta. are Alexis McMurray (Oakville, Ont.), Élizabeth Labbé (Lévis, Que.) and Heather McLean (Port Williams, N.S.) at 19-over-par 235.

PONOKA, Alta. – Calgary natives Annabelle Ackroyd led wire-to-wire, while Tommy McKenzie was clutch in the final round to win their respective divisions at the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on Sunday.

held the lead entering the final day at Wolf Creek, but had to overcome three bogeys on the front nine to close out the victory. The 17-year-old flipped the script on the back nine, notching four birdies and no bogeys to finish at 1 over par for the 54-hole tournament, four shots ahead of runner-up Grace Bell.

“I didn’t play as well on the front nine as I wanted to,” said Ackroyd. “I stayed patient out there. I was in the same situation last year; having the lead heading into the back nine. I think that helped me just staying calm out there.”

A Calgary native, Bell trailed Ackroyd by one stroke heading into the final round, and briefly led on the front nine. She finished in second at 5 over par.

In addition to Ackroyd and Bell, top-five finishers Stephanie Chelack (Calgary), Vanessa Zhang (Vancouver) and Brooke Brezovski (St. Albert, Alta.) earn exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship on July 29 to Aug. 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

In the junior boys’ division, McKenzie was clutch in the closing stages of the final round. The Calgarian worked around a double bogey on the first hole to finish the day with a 72 (+1), 5 over par for the tournament.

McKenzie made par-or-better on each of his last 13 holes, securing his victory with a par putt on the 18^th hole.

“I had a double-bogey on the first hole when I hooked it right into the trees,” said McKenzie. “I just made sure I stayed calm and stayed focused. I wanted to play my game and not worry about anybody else.”

Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek, Alta., led for the majority of the final round, but ultimately finished in second place at the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship for the second consecutive year. He finished 6 over par during the 54-hole tournament, tied with Carter Graf (Sylvan Lake, Alta.), Brady McKinlay (Lacombe, Alta.) and Dustin Franko (Delta, B.C.).

KOMOKA, Ont. – On Sunday, May 26, the London Junior Golf Development Centre at FireRock Golf Club and PGA of Canada professional Brian Gallant were honoured as the 2018 Future Links Facility of the Year.

The London Junior Golf Development Centre had over 300 participants in its Future Links, driven by Acura Learn to Play program in 2018. In addition, Gallant and his academy staff have fostered relationships with a number of local schools running the Future Links Golf in Schools program and have hosted them on field trips to the facility.

FireRock has grown their junior program from just 20 kids in 2012 to almost 500 in 2018, an exceptional accomplishment and testament to their dedication to future of the sport.

A unique initiative Gallant took was approaching Oxbow Glen Golf Course to provide two additional tee blocks that play from 3,000 yards and 3,600 yards. The shorter distance is ideal for juniors just starting the sport, and Oxbow Glen became the first course in the London-area offering six tee blocks.

Golf Canada senior manager of grow the game, Adam Hunter was on hand to celebrate the achievement with Gallant and the FireRock Golf Club staff. Prior to the award presentation and BBQ reception, Gallant lead a junior golfers through a Future Links Junior Skills Challenge.

Gallant has been teaching golf since 2005 and has been previously recognized on the local and provincial level. In 2011, he was awarded the Ontario Coaching Excellence Award and the Ontario Golf Coach Award for his dedication to recreational and grass roots golf.

This is a busy week for FireRock Golf Club, as the course is welcoming the best student-athlete golfers for the Canadian University/College Championship.

The inaugural Future Links Facility of the Year Award was presented in 2013.

PONOKA, Alta. – The 2019 Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship is set to begin Thursday at Wolf Creek Golf Resort.

With support from Alberta Golf, the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship is the third of eight junior championships presented by Golf Canada in partnership with Acura. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on May 30, before the tournament gets underway with round one on May 31.

Wolf Creek Golf Resort is the largest golf facility in Central and Northern Alberta. Designed by Rod Whitman, Wolf Creek boasts 36 holes and offers more selection than any course in the province.

“Golf Canada and Alberta Golf are excited to present the 2019 Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship,” said Akash Patel, the Tournament Director and Rules and Competitions Coordinator with Golf Canada. “We are confident that the Links Course here at Wolf Creek Golf Resort will challenge Canada’s premier junior golfers and allow them the opportunity to showcase their skills.”

The field will consist of 81 golfers in the Junior Boys Division with the top five earning exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on Aug. 11-15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B. Should there be a tie for the fifth position, a playoff will be conducted following the conclusion of play.

The Junior Girls Division will consist of 26 golfers, with the top five (including ties) earning an exemption into the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls on July 29 – Aug. 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

Prior to the championship on Thursday, May 30, Golf Canada and Special Olympics Canada will hold a regional competition in support of Special Olympics golf. This is the third such competition this year, as Special Olympics golf events were also held at the Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific Championship and the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship. A field of 14 local athletes will compete over nine holes. Following the event, PGA of Canada professionals will conduct a clinic for Special Olympics coaches and athletes, focusing on improving skills and leadership within the sport.

THORNTON, Ont. – Tristan Renaud of Sudbury, Ont. came from behind, while Angela Arora of Surrey, B.C. held on to her lead to win their respective divisions at the Future Links, driven by Acura Ontario Championship at Tangle Creek Golf & Country Club on Sunday.

Renaud started the final day five shots behind the lead, but that deficit didn’t last long. On his first hole, he made an eagle three on the 486-yard par five. Renaud put his game into cruise control, making par on his next 14 holes. Renaud would go on to finish the three-day event at 1 over.

“If you look at it on the scorecard it was pretty blemish-free, but there were a lot of good par saves and a lot of short-to mid-range putts I made,” said Renaud. “It wasn’t a scoring day per-se – the wind was strong, so I’m pretty happy with it.”

A bogey on the par-five 18^th made things tight at the top of the leaderboard, as Brandon White of Bourget, Ont. finished one-shot back at 2 over.

Yuqi Liu of Thornhill, Ont., Ben MacLean of Niagara Falls, Ont. and Logan Boucher of Beaconsfield, Que. finished in a three-way tie for third at 3 over.

Renaud, White, Liu, MacLean and Boucher all earn exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, taking place August 11 to 15 at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club in Hartland, N.B.

In junior girl’s action, Arora entered the day in the lead and shot a final-round 81 to withstand a strong push from Oakville, Ont., native Katie Cranston.

Cranston briefly held the lead, but a double bogey on the penultimate hole opened the door for Arora, who made par on each of her last four holes to clinch the title. Arora finished at 12 over par for the tournament to edge Cranston by a stroke.

“Today I had a really strong start,” said Arora. “I ended up getting into some trouble on the sixth hole, but I was also to cope and get over it. I knew I had to finish off strong because everyone was playing well.”

Finishing 3-shots back was Sarah Gallagher at 15 over par.

The duo of Madelin Boyd of Oshawa, Ont. and Victoria Zheng of Markham, Ont finished T4 at 21-over.

By finishing in the top five, Arora, Cranston, Gallagher, Boyd and Zheng earn exemptions into the 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Championship taking place July 29 to August 2 at Lethbridge Country Club in Lethbridge, Alta.

The first two Future Links, driven by Acura Championships junior girls’ title of 2019 have been won by Surrey, B.C. natives – Lauren Kim was victorious in the Future Links, driven by Acura Pacific Championship in early May.
