CALGARY—Fred Couples and John Daly are coming back to Calgary and bringing with them the top rookie on the PGA TOUR Champions, Padraig Harrington,  for the 10th anniversary celebrations at the 2022 Shaw Charity Classic presented by Suncor, August 1-7.

The trio of major winners – Fred Couples (1992 Masters), John Daly (1995 Open Championship, 1991 PGA Championship), and Padraig Harrington (2008 PGA Championship; 2008, 2007 Open Championship) – are the first to add their names to the tee sheet when the PGA TOUR Champions’ lone Canadian stop makes a full return after operating under a modified structure and ticket price in 2021. The 10th-anniverary of the award-winning community event will feature a string of special events and activities for Calgary golf fans to enjoy for as low as $10.

Couples is the first World Golf Hall of Famer to commit to returning to Calgary.  A crowd favourite since the tournament’s inception in 2013, Couples won the 2014 event in thrilling fashion after a career-best final round 61 that included a chip-in eagle on the 54th hole. Boom Boom got sized up for a white cowboy hat after winning the first playoff hole over Billy Andrade.

“Calgary has been a very enjoyable place for me. I have always said, as long as I’m healthy I plan on coming here every year,” said Couples, who has 13 victories on golf’s senior circuit. “The people at Shaw are incredible. The crowds are huge. The course is always in great shape, and I feel like I play it well. There is nothing more a player could ask for. I look forward to getting back and participating during this special year for the tournament.”

A winner of 15 PGA TOUR events, the smooth swinging bomber is remembered most for his 1992 triumph at the Masters Tournament. Once graduating to the senior swing, he made an immediate statement. Finishing second in his first start, he went on to win his next three events, becoming the first player ever to win three of his first four tournaments. Couples has two major championship victories on the PGA TOUR Champions: 2011 Senior Players Championship, and The Senior Open Championship in 2012.

It will be a family affair when Long John Daly makes his first return to the Shaw Charity Classic since his lone appearance in 2016. The two-time major winner will be travelling to Calgary along with his son Little John who will be caddying after recently completing his freshman year playing golf at the University of Arkansas.

One of the most colourful characters in professional sports, Daly is a two-time major champion, a winner of five PGA TOUR titles and one PGA TOUR Champions title who is adored by golf fans around the globe.

The story of how golf’s “Wild Thing” burst onto the international scene never gets old. It was nearly 25 years ago when John Daly was the ninth and final alternate of the 1991 PGA Championship. A 25-year-old rookie, Daly drove halfway across the country the night before his first round at Crooked Stick Golf Club where he eventually went out and won the golf tournament – not to mention legions of fans around the world with his booming drives, deft short game and fearless approach to the game. He backed that up by winning the 1995 British Open at the Home of Golf in St. Andrews.

“I’ve always said I’ve got the greatest fans in the world, and Calgary is no different. No matter what, through thick and thin, they’ve always stuck by me,” said Daly. “This tournament always has huge galleries. There is nothing better than getting it going and having the fans get loud and crazy. That’s just the way I like them so I’m looking forward to getting up to Canada with Little John, and hopefully give the fans something to get loud about.”

Daly and Couples will have to fend off the top name in the PGA TOUR Champions’ rookie class for 2022, Padraig Harrington.

A three-time major winner, Ireland’s Padraig Harrington brings 31 victories worldwide with him to the Shaw Charity Classic. Not only was Harrington the first player from Ireland to win the Claret Jug in 60 years (2007), he was the first European to successfully defend his British Open title in nearly a century the following summer (2008).  A six-time Ryder Cup European Team Member added his third major title to his resume when he also won the 2008 PGA Championship which brought him to third in the Official World Golf Rankings.

“I really enjoy it (playing on the PGA TOUR Champions). I was shocked. I’m substantially longer than the field and yet I got lapped in the first two events,” said Harrington. “These guys were just running by me. I played with Bernhard [Langer] and he made me look like an amateur golfer. It was a lesson for me. If I want to go out there and beat these guys – just because you hit it past them ain’t going to do it. You have to be very good with your wedges and very good with your scoring.”

Three of the biggest names in golf are sure to help tournament officials make a continued impact in supporting the more than 260 youth-based charities benefitting from the Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink program. Donations can be made by visiting www.shawcharityclassic.com/donatenow.

“Fred Couples, John Daly and Padraig Harrington are three of a handful of players in professional golf who are needle movers,” said Sean Van Kesteren, executive director, Shaw Charity Classic. “Sport is entertainment, and these guys are exactly who fans of any sporting event want to come out and see. They are extremely talented. They still hit the ball a mile, and are colourful characters who are sure to entertain both with their play and while interacting with our loyal fan base.”

Single-day General Admission tickets for tournament play August 5-7, 2022, that are purchased in advance for the award-winning tournament will cost $10 while upgraded Clubhouse tickets purchased in advance will be only $30 (plus GST and fees). Juniors 12 and under are admitted FREE when accompanied by a ticketed adult. The deadline to purchase advanced tickets is July 31, 2022, at 11:59 PM MT. Canada’s National Open Golf Championships will welcome a new wine partner as Golf Canada has aligned with Masi Wines, the historic Italian wine producer which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, as the Official Wine of Golf Canada, the RBC Canadian Open and the CP Women’s Open.

Through the partnership, Masi’s premium portfolio, led by Masianco Pinot Grigio, the iconic red Campofiorin and the exciting new Fresco di Masi line – two refreshing organic blends perfect for summer – will be the feature wines poured at Golf Canada’s two National Open Golf Championships.

Masi will also elevate the summer festival atmosphere at the RBC Canadian Open and CP Women’s Open with a pouring experience from the one-of-a-kind Masi Airstream Trailer that offers spectators a custom retreat at the Masi Wine Garden.

“Golf Canada is very proud to partner with Masi Wines to deliver a selection of premium wines to our two flagship properties,” said John Sibley, Chief Commercial Officer at Golf Canada. “Masi’s diverse wine portfolio is well-positioned as the Official Wine of Golf Canada as we look forward to building on the festival atmosphere at the RBC Canadian Open and CP Women’s Open.”

Masi is distributed in Canada by fourth-generation family-owned and operated Authentic Wine and Spirits Merchants – a national fine wine and spirits importer and distributor headquartered in Mississauga, Ont. For Masi, the partnership will allow the wine brand to leverage Canadian golf while continuing to advance its brand profile and portfolio of golfing, hosting, ticketing, and media assets.

“We are delighted to partner with Golf Canada and honoured to serve as the Official Wine of the RBC Canadian Open and the CP Women’s Open.” says Luc Desroches, Sales Managing Director, Canada for Masi. “Golf, like wine, brings people closer together and is at its best when shared amongst good friends. We look forward to introducing golfers across Canada to our exciting range of wines from the beautiful Venetian territories of northeast Italy and beyond. With golf growing in Canada (and Italy!) we are excited to be along for the ride as the preferred glass of the 19th hole.”

T-Birds extend lead, Vikes climb leaderboard in second round at Canadian University/College Championship

temp fix empty alt images for attachment
Samuel Breton Gagnon (left) and Élizabeth Labbé (right) in action at the Canadian University/College Championship at Golf Château Bromont in Bromont, Que., on June 2, 2022.

Bromont, Que. – The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds improved their leads in the men’s and women’s divisions in the second round at the 2022 Canadian University/College Championship, presented by BDO.

“We brought four really good women here and there are five left at home that also could have won this event […] so [as a team] we are not here without those girls,” said Shania Remandaban on UBC’s depth on the women’s side.

On the backs of Sonja Tang’s 5-under 67 and Remandaban’s 3-under 69, UBC strengthened their grip on the women’s team division and head into the third round with a 55-stroke lead.

The men’s team also cemented their lead atop their division with a trio of 1-under par performances from Aidan Schumer, Ethan DeGraaf and Dylan MacDonald, and an even par showing for Mackenzie Bickell.

“I think resilience is number one; our coach is always trying to get us to play smart and keep grinding,” says Aidan Schumer on the strength of UBC’s men’s golf team.

The University of Victoria Vikes men’s team carded the low round of the day, shooting a collective 9-under in the team competition to jump six spots on the leaderboard into second place. Each of the five players were under par on the day: Zachary Ryujin (-4), John Morrow (-3), Aidan Craig Steele (-1), Marlon Neto-Bradley (-1) and Robin Canlan (-1).

Despite a stellar effort to etch his way back into the competition, Morrow says the best is yet to come from him and knows he’ll have to go low over the next two days to be in contention for the individual title.

“I was able to keep it respectable yesterday, but I still don’t feel like I am controlling the golf ball very well,” said Morrow. “I’m going to have to play solid, hit a lot of greens and make some putts.”

Samuel Breton Gagnon and Élizabeth Labbé continued to pace the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Breton Gagnon recorded a 5-under 67 for the second time in as many rounds and holds a four-stroke lead halfway through the competition. The 18-year-old’s 10-under is the lowest 36-hole score in the event since Scott Secord’s 11-under in 2014.

Labbé’s 1-over par 73 brought her to 3-under on the tournament – two strokes ahead of Tang in second place. Grace Bell and Remandaban, also Thunderbirds, hold the third and fourth place spots, respectively.

The highlight of the day came from Remandaban at the 133-yard, par-3 11th hole. The 2019 runner-up fired her tee shot at a blind front-right hole location and knew it was good, but didn’t know how good. She would find out soon enough just how good it was.

“I didn’t see it go in, but my playing partners’ parents said, ‘Nice shot!’ and I said, ‘Thanks!’ then they said, ‘No, it’s a really nice shot – it’s in!’” she laughed. “I didn’t know at all, so it was a nice surprise picking it up.”

Thomas DeMarco (University of Windsor) recorded six birdies on the day and sits in a tie for second place with UBC’s Schumer. Alexis Leray (Université Laval) is alone in fourth at 5-under after a 69 in round two.

After the third round, the field will be cut to the low ten (10) Male teams and the low six (6) Female teams, including any team within 15 shots of the lead.  Individuals within 10 shots of third place, including any player within the top 10, will also make the cut.

Each week we write to Golf Canada members who record a hole-in-one, congratulating them and asking if they’d tell us how it happened. These are their stories (edited for length and clarity).

Lynda Poulin, Greyhawk Golf Club, Hole #15

Hello,

Thank you for your email. I was playing with Dany L. (Director of Operations, Clublink) and Christian P. (Golf Course Superintendent, Clublink).

It happened on hole no 15 at Talon (Greyhawk), 120 yards and I used my nine wood, due to strong winds on that day. You will find attached to this message a video and a picture, which you have my permission to use.

I got my ace on the 14th hole, North Course, white tees. I think it was about 128 yards, helping wind and I used my nine iron. The course was in great shape and we had a terrific day. Here is a pic that you can share. Not bad for a 18 handicap!

Cheers,

John Kim

Thank you for your email!

My foursome was very quick to celebrate with me… Phyllis B; Christine D; and Patricia H. Patricia is one of the league coordinators and spent the rest of the morning yelling out the news to each group that we crossed paths with! I’m extremely lucky to be able to record this as my 2nd hole-in-one… the other was many years ago at the Ottawa Hunt Club while golfing with my dad, Fred J. (he was ecstatic to hear the news of this one).

This one was on the 7th hole of the North Course; 142 yards from the red tees; and I used a magical 7-iron. I was happy to get it on this hole as it is usually one of my more challenging holes for some reason!

I’ve attached the picture that Phyllis took for me and I’m glad she did as I was not thinking very clearly at the time! You also have my permission to use this.

Thanks again for your follow-up with me.

I was playing with my husband, Mike A., and my sisters-in-law, Judy W. and Donna W. I used my 5-iron on the 141 yard hole #8. I was the last to hit and hit it well but I thought it would be about 5 or 6 feet from the hole if I was lucky.

I bent down to get my tee, and Mike was saying that it was heading for the hole and then that it went in. He likes to joke around so I didn’t get too excited but when I looked, I couldn’t see it but thought it could be behind the flag or even off the green. I kept looking as we walked up to the hole but still couldn’t see anything but couldn’t and wouldn’t believe it until I looked into the hole.

Unbelievable! And I still can’t believe it. What a thrill!

It was my third hole in one at Trafalgar and it was on the third hole. It was 100 yards and I used an eight iron. My partners for that morning were: David P. and Andrew M. David confirmed that my ball was in the hole and he removed it.

Please see attached photograph.

Good morning,

First thank you very much for acknowledging this accomplishment. The hole-in-one occurred during regular Ladies 18 Hole League at Wildwood Golf Course in Saskatoon, SK. My playing partners on May 22, 2022 were Dorothy C. and Joyce P. The 14th hole is a 108 yard par-3. I played a 7-iron with a Callaway ball. It was extra fun for me because I got to see the ball go into the hole. A special memory for sure. Unfortunately the picture that we took that day did not turn out very well…..

Mahboob Nawaz, GlenDenning Golf Course, Hole #6

temp alt for theme iandt

Thank you for your kind wishes and gesture on hearing the news of my hole-in-one at Glendenning Golf Club (GD). It is certainly much appreciated!

Although this was my second ‘Ace’ in golf, it certainly was the first at GD, which is my ‘home course’ where I have been a member for almost 13 years!

My amazing moment came on a beautiful sunny Saturday May 21, 2022, at the par 3, hole #6, which was playing about 156 yards into a decent headwind (more of a breeze). I decided to go with my 8 iron. Just as I addressed my ball, a light gust hit us head-on that prompted me to back-off my shot and readjust my stance to hit a lower ball flight. My shot was a firm hit with a lower trajectory than I normally hit coupled with a very slight (baby) fade where I saw the ball go in the hole after the second hop! Initially, it was an unbelievable ‘shock’ to the system where I said out loud to my playing partners, “Oh my gosh… that didn’t just happen…”, and they all erupted in unison saying, “That’s in the hole!”

Not too far away from our tee box is the 15th green where a few other members/friends were putting and they also heard the commotion and joined in to congratulate me, and so did another foursome of avid golfers from the previous hole!

Needless to say, it was an expensive celebration after the round (ha ha ha), which in my opinion, needs to change.

In the excitement of this hole-in-one achievement, I forgot to take more pictures, but I thank a good friend, Jeanette H., who took the time to snap a picture of me retrieving my ball out of the hole, which I am enclosing with this message. My other playing partners were Ronnie H. and Gerard P.

Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to relive that wonderful moment.

Cheers,

Mahboob Nawaz

Fresh off a captivating playoff victory this past weekend at the PGA Championship, Justin Thomas has confirmed his intention to compete in the 2022 RBC Canadian Open.

Thomas is a 15-time winner on the PGA TOUR and 2-time major champion, having previously won the PGA Championship in 2017. Currently no. 5 on the Official World Golf Ranking, Thomas will be competing in his second RBC Canadian Open when the stars of the PGA TOUR descend on St. George’s Golf & Country Club along with nearby Islington Golf Club as the official practice facility.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to Toronto to celebrate the return of the RBC Canadian Open. I enjoyed myself in 2019 and was really impressed by the energy of Canadian golf fans getting behind their National Open Championship.”

Through a solid start to the 2021-22 PGA TOUR season, Thomas has eight top-10 finishes in 13 events played and is currently no. 4 on the FedExCup Ranking. Five of his 15 PGA TOUR wins came during a breakout season in 2016-17.

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic the RBC Canadian Open is set to return June 6-12 in Toronto with Thomas joining an exciting field led by defending champion and world no. 7 Rory McIlroy; world no. 1 and reigning Master champion Scottie Scheffler; The Players 2022 champion and world no. 3 Cameron Smith; world no. 13 and Team RBC ambassador Dustin Johnson; world No. 15 Matthew Fitzpatrick; and world no. 21 Tony Finau.

Canadian PGA TOUR players looking forward to the celebrated return of the RBC Canadian Open include Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin, Nick Taylor, Roger Sloan, Taylor Pendrith, Adam Svensson, and Michael Gligic.

More field announcements including additional Canadian player exemptions are set for the coming weeks as golf and festival fans look ahead to the 111th playing of Canada’s National Men’s Open Championship. Tickets for the 2022 RBC Canadian Open are available here.

Having just hit my tee ball OB on 12 at the Paintbrush, I was last to tee off on the par-3 13th. The 13th was playing 212 yards to a back pin. Jeremy N. led off with a well struck 5 or 6 iron that took a soft bounce and just failed to crest the ridge in the middle of the green. Michael O., a new member at The Pulpit Club followed and hit a great hybrid on the same line as Jeremy, but with a lower ball flight he appeared to crest the ridge. Since I lost my ball on the previous hole, I reached in to my pocket and pulled out a mint Callaway Chrome Soft that I found during my recent search. I teed that ball up, looked at the Maple Leafs, and made a decent pass with my 3 wood.

When we got to the green, we saw 2 balls on the green, with Michael’s being less than 10ft away. After looking for a minute or two, we were thinking my ball was lost, until Michael looked in the hole.

It was a long winter, but it is so good being back out on the course….what a game!

Thanks for the note!

Was playing with a few good friends and fellow Summit members Chris S., Sean R. and Brent H.

Was a beautiful but windy day. 10th hole, we lasered it at 173, but felt it was playing 195 or so with the wind and elevation. I took out my 5 iron, had a nice smooth swing, the ball bounced once before the green one more on the fringe, rolled about 6 feet and it dropped. To be honest, I didn’t really believe it until we got up to the green.

Here are a couple pictures by all means share if you want. Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you very much, and yes you have my permission to share if you’d like!

For details, I was playing with Mark M. and Ethan O. The yardage was about 185 and I used a 7 iron. This is my second hole-in-one in ten months, and third in my lifetime, with the last one being on number 13 at the Edmonton Country Club in July 2021. Feeling very lucky to say the least!

Thank you for the email and the graphic.

Bryan Ho, Hollinger Golf Club, Hole #13

I was on hole 13 at Hollinger par 3; playing from the whites. It was 103.4 yards to the pin, as indicated by my rangefinder. Thats right in the range of my approach wedge (50 degrees).

The ball I struck, had the best feeling swing I had all day. Great high ball flight that landed right in front of the flag and it slowly crept down to the hole. Once it fell, I couldn’t believe it and in that moment the realization came at a burst and I screamed at the top of my lungs. It alerted the group ahead of me that was teeing off haha. They thought I had a heart attack. After I told them that I just hit a hole-in-one, they came to the flag to check and sure enough there it was: My TaylorMade RBZ ball that I found in the woods that day.

Thank you for contacting me, I was able to relive it again by describing what happened!

Yes, it was the moment of my golf life! It was on hole number 12 at Maple City Country Club, and I believe the yardage was 105 yards. I used a 6 hybrid for that shot. I played with Judy P., Judy W. and Claudette R.

Cheers!

Thank you so much for acknowledging the feat.

I was playing with my cousin Marco C., my usual playing partner, it was the 4th hole par 3. We were playing from the black tees; my watch indicated it was 152 yards to the middle, so I used my 7-iron and the ball was moving left to right, playing the wind accordingly. I saw it bounce on the green, but because of the time of day (5’ish) and glare from the sun off the green, I couldn’t see where it landed.

We drove up to the hole, and I didn’t see my ball on the green, I was looking for it, right of the flagstick, and in the greenside bunker, but didn’t see it. Marco checked the pin and it was in the hole.

I don’t have a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account (old and wise for that kind of stuff), so taking a picture didn’t cross my mind. We just carried on with the round. The funny thing we didn’t know how to mark it on the score card… is it just a 1 and a rectangle or …. we didn’t know it was two circles…. we know how to mark birdies and bogies and what not …..but for a hole in 1, we had no clue.

Thank you for very much, really do appreciate Golf Canada reaching out.

Nanaimo, B.C. — After battling rainy conditions in Nanaimo this week, the final round of the NextGen Pacific Championship – fueled by JOURNIE Rewards wrapped up on Sunday at Nanaimo Golf Club with Angela Arora and Eric Zhao each securing a one-stroke victory to win their respective divisions.

The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the first of eight NextGen Championships and featured a starting field of 119 male and female golfers.

For Angela Arora, who hails from Surrey, B.C., the win marks the second championship title of the calendar year following her victory at the CJGA Western Canadian Championship in March. Arora, a member of Team Canada’s National Junior Squad, fired rounds of 70, 74, and 76 to earn the top spot on the leaderboard.

“This week was great, my putting was really good the first day and that got me off to a good start,” said the 17-year-old. It built some momentum into the week and overall, my game was in great shape. I had a couple holes today where I didn’t play as good but I figured it out and I finished strong which I’m really happy about.”

“This week I tried to change my mentality a little bit,” said the North York, Ont. native. I tried to have fun throughout the whole week and honestly, if you have fun you’re probably going to play good so that’s a big takeaway from this week. It was definitely successful because I was way more confident over my shots.”
